The way we teach and talk about writing is extremely important in establishing a
community of strong, independent writers. Writing Fundamentals has been written with this in mind. However, before you launch your first study, there are things you will want to do to help lay the groundwork for a successful writing workshop.

Conferring: Asking the Right Questions

Conferences are a time to help students make connections not corrections. Good conference questions
should help teach the writer and not the writing. In other words, there's an art to asking the right kinds of
questions. When looking over drafts, discussing ideas, asking about drawings, or guiding students to connect
to the teaching for the day, we want to ensure they comprehend not only the content of stories they read,
but the craft decisions the writers of those stories make.

Anytime of year is a good time to celebrate good children's literature, and Book Clubs provide a great way to do just that! Book Clubs offer students an excellent opportunity to read literature of their choosing and to talk with their peers about what they read. Classroom or school Book Clubs can be created and built upon the principles of literature circles supported by Harvey Daniels's work and fit into any classroom method of instruction, allowing for small-group work. For more information on literature circles and Book Clubs, see Daniels's popular Literature Circles: Voice and Choice in Book Clubs ; Reading Groups (2001), and a more recent title, Mini-Lessons for Literature Circles (2004), for tips on explicitly teaching to maximize students' experience reading together in groups.

Before launching your study, consider your teaching goals. List them in the space provided to remind yourself
where you are hoping to lead students during the course of the study. Although other things will come up durning
your conferences, it will help to have cues to remind yourself of your teaching goals. Use the grid to make quick
notes about each student.
